One of my work colleagues told me about his “Sunday movie night ritual” with his partner and ever since Tyler and I have decided to do it too. If you’re into films and can never find things to do with your partner, friends or family, this might be your solution. So, what is mine and Tyler’s movie night ritual?
It’s pretty simple. One person picks a theme for your films and depending on how many people you decide to do this with, depends on the number of weeks the theme sticks. For example, because it’s just me and Tyler in our movie night ritual, our themes run for 2 weeks.
Next, a different person to the one who picked the theme gets to choose the first film. So, in my case, if I let Tyler choose the theme, let’s say he decided it to be “Comedy”, I can then choose the film. In this case, I’d probably go for “Sausage Party”. The following week the theme is still comedies but it’s now Tyler’s turn to choose the film. We do this every Saturday or Sunday night, depending on when we see each other. (It can vary).
As we have all week to decide what film we’re going to choose, we can make sure when it comes to 7:30 pm we have the film loaded and ready to go – with snacks of course – and can watch it straight away. Before doing this, we often found ourselves searching for ages to find a film we could agree on and by the time we decided, we’d both be too tired to finish the whole thing.
Tip: Don’t let each other know the film before your due to watch it. It makes the whole “event” more fun and surprising. Tyler was often pleasantly surprised with my choices!
Movie Night Themes
Don’t go for the same old-same old movie genres. Spice it up a bit to make things more fun. If you’re stuck with where to start, here are some suggestions:
- Feel Good
- Human Vs. Nature
- “Family Night In”
- Love Story
- Favourite from Netflix
- Powerful Female
- American Lead Actor/Actress
- Set in the city
- Films You Haven’t Seen
Let me know of any other themes that Tyler and I can do – no doubt we’ll run out of ideas at some point. Netflix has some mainstream genres where you can get more ideas and explore new films, though making your genres more quirky and specific like the above, can make it more interesting.
Tip: If you are running out of themes, recycle them. Especially if there is only 2 or 3 of you doing the movie nights, there’ll more than 3 comedies you can watch without repeating the same films.
